Corporate Blasphemy

Image
I broke down this morning. I cried in the toilet. So what? I came to a point where I seriously can't take my job anymore. I thought staying there for a year or two would get me used to the fact that I'll be working for people, play by their own rules, eat and drink when they think I'm allowed to, sit with people I never chose and have to hear all about their stories, become sociable to be able to mingle and avoid social neglection, etc.. Fact is that it's been three years now, and it's getting worse. I thank god for the fact that I work in a good company, and the people I work with are some of the best people I met in this country. The conditions I work in are some of the most prosperous ever, I'm given the freedom to come a little bit late in the morning and take enough time to enjoy my lunch, instead of having to be punctual in time. Better yet, my company actually has clubs, I recently was the one who launched the photography club, which was added to the e...

A Thousand Dollars Richer

Image
I sold my kindle just tonight, a few hours ago, the kindle I kept dreaming of having ever since I heard of it, for a bicycle in exchange, topped with a 40$ in difference. I failed at keeping it of use and therefore I sold it. At the same time, today Farzat, a great guy got back his bicycle, the bicycle I was supposed to buy (a good racing bike) but decided to return it at the last minute. My old camera, the Nikon D80 is on sale now, for a bundle worth 900$ at the moment, having the body along with two lenses. In return I now have the newer D7000 (that I barely got the chance to use) which I got from a Lebanese business man last week in Gemmayzeh, on the night at which he was supposed to fly to the US. I have now two bicycles, just as before; I have a new camera, just as before, but with the only difference of being a 1000$ richer. Yes, a 1000$ in 2 months, effectively in 2 weeks. This is business, this is making money out of substantially attractive deals and once-in-a-lifet...

Anonymous Confessions, The Epilogue

Image
Source:  Original Article The Last Confession was the straw that broke the camel's back: What I started on my previous post  was phenomenal, it was pretty obvious that I had to document it. If you're still unfamiliar with what I'm talking about, check the Anonymous Confessions blog post; I had announced I want to play a game, based on the work of an american artist. Source:  Anonymous Confessions The thread of confessions started out with the following: "I still love her" "İt hurts not to see him" "I do care about what people think of me" Several anonymous persons decided to join later on, upon seeing the first feedback, and thought it might be a good idea to throw in their own confession, since, in the end, everything was totally anonymous. The majority spoke of relationships, parents, self esteem, aspirations, and unfinished love stories. Until the last guest posted their comment : "Confession 1: I wish I can help everyone who...

Hello D80!

Image
YES I finally own a DSLR! Everything happened in the blink of an eye. Sitting here remembering all the time I spent on comparing cameras, features, learning about the latest technology in photography, and adapting my wishlist to my budget, I truly feel what happened has been both an achievement and a slap to the face. Achievement in terms of finance and quality vs. money. And yet it was a slap to teach me that extensive planning is a waste of time in most cases, leave it sharp and short. I finally got hit by a chance from up above. Two shares on my FB timeline announced a person is selling his D80 gear. After doing my personal research on both the camera AND on the person selling it, not believing the price he was asking for, I decided to contact him. One hour later, the cam is mine. Screenshot of the original Facebook post It turned out later that the seller is Georges, he was selling everything in order to leave permanently to live in Africa, which explained the low...

My First Amazon Order

Image
I decided to write this post right after I opened the new Seagate External Hard Drive box, delivered by Borderlinx , DHL. A month ago I ordered a 3TB External Seagate HDD from Amazon.com. The price at the time was discounted to 109.99$, previously 139.99$, which would be the deal of the year, I assumed. Upon the estimation of the efficient DHL staff, shipping and all the additional fees (customs, VAT, clearance, etc..) should cost around 52$. Order being made on amazon.com, the package reached my virtual address (Ohio, US, address being given free of charge upon registration with borderlinx) in 2 business days, which was more than perfect. This is where the hassle began. Outstanding deals usually take place during holidays, which, of course, is a hectic time of the year for all freight companies, due to the escalating number of orders and the additional stress imposed by global shippers. Alas, the package delivery to Lebanon was delayed one week, and it reached my office this morni...

Anonymous Confessions

Image
Let's play a game, shall we? Apparently there's been an exhibition, a public art project for the american artist  Candy Chang  who thought it would be interesting to open up a space where people can anonymously project their confessions, their deepest secrets, and enjoy the reaction of whoever reads it. Source: Original Article "By the end of the exhibition, over 1500 confessions were displayed on the walls. It’s about sex, love, or fears of dying alone. By collecting the confessions of the hotel’s visitors, this project seeks to create a cathartic sanctuary for this temporary community and help us see we are not alone in our quirks, experiences, and struggles as we try to lead fulfilling lives." Source: Original Article Source: Original Article This post is written for the benefit of the public. I invite you everyone to do the same, let's share our secrets. Hint : Post your confession in the comment field below while choosing the " ...

My 30 Day Challenge - Day 17

Image
Day 17 - A picture of something that has made a huge impact on your life recently. (Read more about the 30-day Challenge ) Yes indeed, money has grown so fast between my hands the last two years that I can't find any traces of it now, all that's left is loans and debt. I long for the days when the 150$ I used to make at the end of each month from private tutoring were enough to make my day: I was a lot happier back then....

Being Broke 101

Image
I've always took a decision to be my own financial boss, my own financial supervisor ever since I knew I'm in an era where there's no going back to being broke. But just like any other game, life has cheated. Five days ago I left my parents' house in Tripoli back to my house in Beirut just as any other Sunday, with the sole difference of having no more than 6000 LBP (4$) in my back pocket. My luck and thoughts before that weekend relied on the fact that my BankerNet card still has 18,000 LBP (12$) which is more than enough to buy the essential house needs such as bread, cheese and others (I always buy in small quantities). But to my heart-banging surprise, the card was rejected at the supermarket and I clearly had to pay the 4$ to the cashier (to save any embarrassment there is). Tough luck I assure you, but quiet an unforgettable experience it was. Believe me when I tell you, having no money every once in a while feels good. Watching the brands of commercial chocolate...
